Lot Essay

With their richly figured lustrous timber and sobre lines, these tables relate to the furniture supplied by Gillows for Mere Hall, Lancashire. Perhaps intended as 'dressing-tables' - as Hepplewhite described those with drawers in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide of 1788 - a related pair of bow-fronted tables was sold from Mere by Mrs. Langford-Brooke, Christie's House sale, 23 May 1994, lot 43.
