Lot Essay

O'Keeffe's first sitting with Halsman took place at her ranch in New Mexico in 1948. It was not until 1967 that she sat again before his camera this time in his New York studio. The image offered here captures an older O'Keeffe, content and relaxed, gazing confidently into his lens. Halsman's masterful composition places O'Keeffe to one side of the frame, setting off her glowing face against the silouette of her black jacket.

Other examples of this image are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. and the Amon Carter Museum of Art, Fort Worth, Texas.
