Private John Power was born near Ennis in County Clare and attested for the 8th Regiment at Aldershot in September 1876, aged 19 years. His subsequent service in India and Afghanistan covered the period September 1877 until May 1883, including operations during the Second Afghan War. Power was finally discharged to the Army Reserve in September 1888.
