Captain Thomas Francis Swinford was appointed an Ensign in the 98th Regiment in October 1857 and advanced to Lieutenant in November 1859. Subsequently attached to the 6th Punjab Infantry, he was employed in the force under Brigadier-General Chamberlain on the North West Frontier in 1860 and fought in a number of engagements against the Waziris, among them the actions of Poluseen and Makin, and the forcing of the Burrarrah Pass. Swinford was advanced to Captain in March 1865 and retired by the sale of his Commission in April 1871.
