Lot Essay

Gunner Joseph Frith was born in the Parish of Hyde, Chester and attested for the Royal Artillery at Oldham in February 1858, aged 20 years. Several times advanced to Bombardier, and at least once to Sergeant, his appearance at several Court-Martials ensured his rapid return to the rank of Gunner. He was discharged at Woolwich in May 1879, soon after returning from India.
