Sold with an emotive collection of original letters written by the recipient to his 'Darling little child' while on active service in the Boer War, covering the period June to November 1900, the last letter dated 2.11.1900, shortly before his death through disease, '... We are in charge of this little town and have Boers all round who shoot at us if we go more than a mile or two outside. We have had one Officer killed and several men killed since we came here and we have to look out for the enemy very carefully ...'

Major Alexander Francis Grant Foulerton was born in March 1859 and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, Commissioned into the Leinster Regiment from the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders Militia in October 1880, he was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1881 and to Captain in September 1886. Subsequently employed in the Sikkim Expedition of 1888, when he was placed in charge of the Signallers, Foulerton gained further advancement to Major in March 1896, soon after having been appointed as an Adjutant of Militia. In April 1900 he became Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion, Leinsters and saw active service in South Africa up until the time of his death from disease at Brede on 5.1.1901.
