Lieutenant Anthony James Bavin was born at Old Catton, Norwich in December 1893 and educated at Stubbington House and the Royal Naval College, Osborne. Subsequently appointed a Midshipman in H.M.S. Minotaur, Flagship of the China Station, he was transferred as a Sub-Lieutenant to H.M.S. Ambuscade in June 1914 and as a Lieutenant to H.M.S. Mary Rose in January 1916. In this latter ship he was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31.5.1916, and still aboard her over a year later when she was sunk by German Cruisers on 17.10.1917. In company with the Strong Bow, the Mary Rose had been convoying Scandinavian ships in the North Sea - 'She fought with great gallantry and indomitable spirit against overwhelming odds, but of her Officers and crew only ten were saved'. Sadly Bavin was not among them, being posthumously Mentioned in Despatches for 'gallantry in the action between H.M. Torpedo Boat Destroyers Mary Rose and Strong Bow and three German Light Cruisers which attacked a convoy on 17 October 1917' (London Gazette 7.8.1918 refers).

Lieutenant Nigel Benjamin Bavin was born at Eaton, Norwich in May 1896 and educated at Stubbington House, Norwich Grammar School and Berkhamsted School. Gazetted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment in August 1914, he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion in France in January 1915. Advanced to Lieutenant in the following month, Bavin was killed in action during the Second Battle of Ypres on 23.5.1915, when his dug-out was hit by a shell. Aged just 19 years, he was buried with full honours at La Brique.
