Private William Simpson was born in Burnley, Lancashire and enlised at Newport, Monmouthshire. Formerly a Grenadier Guardsman, his Regimental Number confirms his status as an original member of the Welsh Guards. Sadly he was killed in action on 10.8.1916, the day the 1st Battalion took over the line between Beaumont Hamel and Serre, on the Somme. He was buried in the Bertrancourt Military Cemetery.
