2nd Corporal James Fraser was killed by a round shot while attempting to repair the embrasure in No. 10 Battery during the assault on the Quarries on 7.6.1855. According to the History of the Royal Sappers and Miners, he was 'a fearless young Non-Commissioned Officer', who, in spite of enemy fire and the thunder of our own guns, 'toiled away with dauntless perseverance', until blown from the embrasure by a round shot that 'carried away his right arm and the whole of his breast and ribs, exposing his quivering heart'.
