Lot Essay

Captain Humphrey John Hare was born in Bath, Somerset in February 1869 and gazetted to the Royal Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in February 1888. Advanced to Lieutenant in February 1891, he served in the Waziristan Delimitation Escort with No. 2 Company, Bengal Sappers and Miners and was present in the action at Wano, and was afterwards attached to No. 5 Company in the operations under General Lockhart. Sadly, Hare died of disease in Ceylon in November 1900, less than a year after his advancement to Captain.
