Lieutenant-General James Edward Tennat Nicolls was gazetted to the Bengal Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in December 1841 and first witnessed active service at the Battle of Maharajpoor. In the First Sikh War, as a Lieutenant - and one of just two Engineers present at the Battle of Moodkee - he was severely wounded. Nicolls went on to enjoy steady promotion over the next 30 years, finally retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-General in December 1878. He died at Broadstairs, Kent in April 1900.
