Honorary Captain Arthur Thomas Lewis was born in Llanelli in February 1844 and attested for the Royal Engineers in Novemer 1862. Between then and being commissioned as a Lieutenant and Quarter-Master in June 1883, he witnessed active service in South Africa and Egypt as a Sergeant-Major in 'C' Troop, R.E., including the actions of Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir, the latter resulting in him being 'specially commended' by H.R.H. the Field Marshal C.-in-C. for his 'meritorious services' (Letter dated 24.11.1882 refers). Lewis went on to serve in the Suakin operations of 1885 and in Hong Kong between 1890-94 and was placed on the Retired List as an Honorary Captain in February 1899. He died at Maidstone in June 1908.
