The Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded by King Henry IV in 1607 both as a military award of the nobility and to mark his conversion to the Roman Catholic faith. The following year the Order merged with the French branch of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem - a religious Hospitaller Order that had been founded in 1060. Originally a one class Order, it was increased to two in 1778. It was at various times awarded for military or diplomatic merit.
