Lot Essay

The Cross was instituted on 25.9.1823 for award to the Officer's and men of the French Army, who on the 20 July of that year assisted in saving the Duc d'Angouléme from a fire in the Church and Convent of the Holy Spirit in Madrid. The French, under the Duke, had invaded Spain earlier that year in order to restore peace and the Spanish monarchy.
