The Order of St. Januarius was instituted on 6.7.1738 by King Charles of the Two Sicilies (later Charles III of Spain), to commemorate his marriage with Princess Amelia, daughter of King Frederick August III of Poland and Elector of Saxony. A one class order, it was generally awarded to high ranking Roman Catholic nobles.
