Captain Oliver Goldsmith was born in July 1911, the son of Colonel G.M. Goldsmith, C.B.E., and educated at Cheltenham College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. It was while a Cadet at the latter establishment that he won the Royal Humane Society's Medal for a 'family rescue' at sea, off County Wicklow. Subsequently commissioned in the Wiltshire Regiment, he was advanced to Captain in 1943 and died on active service in Italy on 24.1.1944, while attached to the King's Own Yorkshire Regiment.
