Leading Aircraftsman Llewellyn Nicholas, D.F.M., was born in Penzance, Cornwall in January 1901 and joined the Royal Flying Corps as a Boy Entrant in December 1917. Qualifying as a Fitter with the rank of Aircraftsman 2nd Class in May 1919, he went out to France in the following month and in late January 1920 to Mesopotamia. He is believed to have been serving in No. 216 Squadron at the time of winning his D.F.M. Advanced to Leading Aircraftsman in May 1921, Nicholas was placed on the Reserve in June 1923.
