Spitzweg's humorous title describes the moment after an amorous encounter between a smiling dairymaid and a hunter, smoking his pipe. A pair of fluttering butterflies are the iconographical representation of the intimate moment, despite the protagonists parting the scene of passion in opposite directions. This symbolism was used in other forms in Spitzweg's oeuvre: as two doves or less commonly a dog, denoting loyalty or sexuality, possibly deriving from the artist's awareness of fifteenth century Netherlandish painting.
