Lot Essay

The Fruit Market, Granada, a rare example of Weeks' Spanish oeuvre, is derived from oil sketches painted in and around Cordoba and Granada and was probably produced on his return from Morocco to Paris. He travelled extensively in the Middle-East, South America and Spain, capturing the light and color in these exotic locations.

Weeks studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, acquiring an "en plein air" technique of painting and an individual manner in capturing light and shadows. In his book, American Orientalists, Gerald Ackermann comments on the the artist's skill in "...putting together grand compositions (with a) wonderful eye for Architecture, not just for it's stylistic niceties, but also for it's presence in sunlight, (which) transmits a view of the past that has to be accepted as true."

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Dr. Ellen K. Morris.
