Another version of this composition, formerly in the collection of Paul Mellon, was sold at Sotheby's London (18 November 1981, lot 66), where it was attributed to J.-G. Hamilton. Alastair Laing (written communication) has suggested a possible attribution for the Lagerfeld painting to J.-B. Martin fils. He has also identified the subject of the picture as King Louis XV after his first mounting on a horse at the royal Château de La Muette on 8 May 1720.
