Pradier won the Prix de Rome for painting in 1812 and the Grand Prix the following year. He won a first class medal upon his debut at the Salon of 1820 and from then onwards he concentrated on sculpture. Pradier is probably best known for his work on the Arc de Triomphe, the Madeleine and Napoleon's tomb in Les Invalides.
