Antonin Mercie won the Grand Prix de Rome at the age of 23. He was appointed professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and became a member of the Institute in 1891. Mercie was also President of the Societe des Artistes Francais and he attained the rank of Grand Officier in the Legion d'Honneur.
