A GRAECO-ROMAN GLASS IMITATING GARNET INTAGLIO WITH GREEK SIGNATURE OF SKYLAX

The oval intaglio with characteristic concave reverse, the front deeply engraved with a standing nude figure of Mercury gazing towards his right, with weight on his left leg, leaning his right elbow against a low pillar which is moulded above and below, the god wearing a leafy wreath, a cloak fastened around his neck and folded over his right arm falling in zigzag pleats, a kerykeion in his left hand, the musculature of the torso and the facial features finely modelled, a six letter Greek signature along the edge of the intaglio near the pillar
