A ROMAN BANDED AGATE CAMEO WITH FEMALE BUST

Oval, the draped bust carved in the white layer on a grey background, in profile to the right, her waved hair caught at the nape of her neck in a chignon wound with a plait, the reverse with characteristic knapped surface, mouth and chin chipped, 16 in. (2.7 cm.) across; the upper half of an oval brown and white agate cameo showing seated bearded Zeus holding a sceptre in his right hand, with well-modelled naked torso, traces of drapery at waist, pierced longitudinally, circa 1st Century B.C., 1 in. (2.6 cm.) across; and a group of hardstone intaglios including cornelian, chalcedony, jasper and agate, six with profile male and female deity and portrait busts, including bearded Jupiter, a standing deity, two with a satyr playing a flute, striding Mars, a boar(?) and an oval coral cameo with frontal head, Roman period and 'after the antique', 6 in. (1.4 cm.) long max. (14)
