AN ELAMITE BRONZE AXE-HEAD
CIRCA LATE 3RD/EARLY 2ND MILLENNIUM B.C.
The cylindrical shaft with lion head protome, a blade emerging from its open jaws, the lion's mane terminating in three coils on the shaft's side, 5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) long; a Luristan bronze axe-head shaft surmounted by a crouching lion, below a snarling lion-mask with jaws agape, traces of iron blade, 2½ in. (6.4 cm.) long; a bronze axe-head with spiked butt, the shaft with four ribs terminating in conoid projections, and decorated with a lion head protome with arrow-like tongue, the flaring blade emerging from its mouth, 8¾ in. (22.1 cm.) long, both late 2nd/early 1st millennium B.C.; a bronze whetstone, the handle in the form of a lion head with bulbous eyes, with cylindrical stone hone, 4.1/8 in. (10.6 cm.) long; another bronze lion's head whetstone handle, a suspension loop under its jaw, one ear tip chipped, 2¼ in. (5.7 cm.) long; and a calf's head bronze whetstone handle, loop under jaw, 1¾ in. (4.4 cm.) long, all 9th-8th Century B.C. (6)
