A COPTIC TEXTILE FRAGMENT
CIRCA 5TH CENTURY A.D.
An octagonal medallion, the central tondo filled with rows of purplish-brown human figures each with one arm raised, surrounded by a similarly coloured border with conjoined octagonals with geometric designs interspersed with six lions, textile 10.3/8 x 9¾ in. (26.3 x 24.7 cm.) max.; two rectangular border textile fragments, the background in cream and brown, details in purple and white, one with frieze of birds and fringed border, 16 x 4 in. (40.7 x 10.2 cm.) max., the other with frieze and octagonal medallion infilled with numerous stylized figures, animals, birds and trees, 13¾ x 6¼ in. (34.9 x 15.9 cm.) max., both circa 7th Century A.D.; and a leaf-shaped textile fragment infilled in dark brown with undulating leafy vine branches growing from an urn with twin handles, circa late 4th-5th Century A.D., 9¼ x 6¾ in. (23.4 x 17.2 cm.) max., all framed (3)
