Lot Essay

On 5th October 1831 the "Conto Buch Sr. Majestat des Königs vom 1. Januar bis" records that Lieutenant General von Ryssel I von Neisse was supplied with the following vase, the description of which matches the present lot: 1. Vase Mnchner No. 2 ohne Henkel mit coul: Panorama vom Königl: Palais und dessen Umgebung, rund herum gemalt, oben und unten ganz vergoldet und gravirt...298 Rthlr.. The vase is recorded as having a gilt-bronze foot: Bronze Schrauben zum Drehen u. Sockel...Rthlr..

Originally evolved at Nymphenburg in 1822 by Friedrich von Gärtner, this model became the standard vehicle for Royal gifts from the House of Prussia in the next two decades. For an exhaustive discussion of these vases see Winfried and Ilse Baer, Ibid. (Berlin 1983).

The panorama, though running round the outer circumference of the vase, in fact depicts the view of Berlin taken from a central point on the Lustgarten. Although other panoramic vases are recorded at the factory, this is the only example to depict a specific view in this manner.
