JOYCE, James. Ulysses. Paris, 1927 [but actually New York: printed by Adolph and Rudolph Loewinger for Samuel Roth, 1929]. 4o. Original blue wrappers (minor rubbing to spine edges); slipcase. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, UNAUTHORIZED, a pirated version of the ninth printing of the Shakespeare and Company edition. Many of these spurious copies actually reached Paris where they were shipped (back) to the United States as genuine, resulting in large numbers of this printing being seized by vice authorities upon importation. In the confusion, parts of this printing were used to set the type in the 1934 Random House "authorized" edition. Rare. Provenance: Goodwin copy. Slocum & Cahoon A19.
