FITZGERALD, F. Scott. ALS to Maxwell Perkins, Westport CT, [ca. May 1920]. 1 page, oblong 4o, with 2 separate "notes" on either side. "I AM, THANK THE GOOD LAWDY GAWD, WRITING AGAIN." In an unpublished letter, Fitzgerald comments on the press notices for his first novel and thanks legendary Scribner's editor Maxwell Perkins for a contract (most probably for his first collection of short stories, Flappers and Philosophers, published in September 1920). Fitzgerald also remarks on the first appearance of one of his best stories, "The Ice Palace is in this week's Post. I'm curious to know whether it'll take. I'll be in town this wk & will drop in." On the facing side and with a different pencil, which Fitzgerald has titled "Idea for a Literary Note", he records the number of quotes taken from his work used in the reviews for his first novel, This Side of Paradise. "In the first 3 dozen notices of Fitzgerald's book 360 different and distinct lines were quoted entire by various reviewers [This is indeed a quotable book full of epigrams, observations with every sentence pointed 7 finished oh what a line of bull!]." Fitzgerald letters to Perkins, especially from early in their association, are almost unknown on the market. Provenance: John William Rogers.
