A ROMAN MARBLE SARCOPHAGUS LID FRAGMENT
Circa 3rd Century A.D.

To the right of the tabula ansata within a rectangular frame are two winged, cloaked putti, one driving a biga pulled by panthers to the right, one driving a biga pulled by goats to the left, the putto on the left holding a torch, a bundle of wheat below the panthers, the putto to the right holding a kalathos with fruit, below the goats, a kalathos with fruit to which is tied a shepard's staff, the corner of the lid with a head or mask akroteria, the high polish of the face contrasting with the extensively drilled curly hair framing the face, with several locks loosely tied above the forehead; together with a joining fragment composed of two-thirds of the tabula ansata and a putto, wearing a tunic and holding a branch, driving panthers to the left, 42 1/2in. (107.9cm.) long for the illustrated section (2)
