A pair of French tôle peinte monteiths, second half 19th century
Of tapering oval form, the lobed rims each with recesses for sixteen glasses, the exteriors later painted in gold with pairs of opposing sphinxes amongst scrolling foliage on crimson grounds, with loop handles to each end, on moulded gilt-heightened bases -- 15¼in. (38.8cm.) wide, 5in. (12.75cm.) high (2)
