Lot Essay

Enos Smedley was born in 1805, in Willistown Township, Chester County, and was the son of George Smedely, a Quaker immigrant. Enos Smedely was the last potter to apprentice to Aaron James, who died in 1823. He was listed in the tax records of 1827 and 1829 as a potter. According to a family geneology, he purchased the Jesse Kearsey pottery in Downingtown. In 1831 he established the West Chester Pottery.
