AN UNGLAZED REDWARE WALL POCKET
STAMPED GEORGE S. FRESHLEY, 1856-1922, LEBANON, PENNSYLVAINA, CIRCA 1883

The arched back stamped "G.S. FRESHLEY/LEBANON" and perforated for hanging above the pocket with punch decorated rim and large applied medallions, now orange-painted--10 ½in. high

Lot Essay

George S. Freshley was born in 1856 in Lancaster and married Clara L. McClauglin on January 1, 1890. In Boyd's Lebanon Directory for 1883-1884, Gerorge S. Freshley Pottery is listed at 35 North 7th Street. Frederick Freshley is also listed along with William Freshley as moulder at the same address. In the Lebanon Business directory for 1883-1884, under the heading of "POTTER" G. S. Freshley is the only one listed for that trade. Freshely is not listed in 1874-1875 business directory. However, he is listed in Boyd's Lebanon directory for 1885-1886 as "Freshely, George S. Penn Novelty Co. 360 North 8th Street." He died in 1922 and is burried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery at the Freshley family plot.
