A WOOL JACQUARD WOVEN COVERLET
JOHN BROSEY, JR., (CIRCA 1812 - ?), MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, DATED 1842

Worked in salmon, navy, pale green and cream wool in two panels, the central field embellished with alternating starbursts, crossed roses, tulip medallions and rosettes bordered on three sides by a small double row of houses finished with fringe, self-bound on the fourth side, with one border bearing the woven identification, "J. Brosey A. Everly/ 1842"--100in. x 80½in.

Lot Essay

John Brosey worked as a weaver in Manheim Township, Lancaster County from at least 1835 through the 1860s. The son of a local Lancaster weaver of the same name, Brosey, like his fellow weaver Emmanuel Grube (see lot 302), is also listed as a weaver in the 1850 and 1860 Pennsylvania census.
