Two women on a terrace,
gouache heightened with gold on paper, finely painted, on a terrace with a lake beyond, two ladies sit against cushions on a summer carpet, one holds the long stem of a hookah in her right hand and a white cloth in her left, the other holds a tiny cup, three maid servants sit or stand behind each lady, buff border painted with gold flowering vine between gold margins, cream leaf painted with alternating gold-outlined poppies and lilies, red outer border, framed and glazed, Faizabad, circa 1750 - leaf 35.8 x 23.5cm.

Lot Essay

The border is similar to those of the small Clive Album. Though believed to be complete, loose leaves in similar style are known.
Painting in similar style and of similar subject matter are also in the St Petersburg Album (eg. folio 65 recto).
