Two baramasa illustrations,
gouache heightened with gold on paper, the first representing the month of Magh (Jan.-Feb.), showing a noble and lady standing together on a carpet in a courtyard, he holds a flower, she holds a tray of refreshment, in the trees behind sit a peacock and parrot, inscribed above 'maha'; the second showing the month of Phalgun (Feb.-Mar.), a noble and lady stand together on a terrace, a holi syringe and coloured powder flask on the ground beside them, while in the sky above various figures float near a flaming orb representing the goddess Holika being burned, yellow border with black rules, verso of each with black devangari text (a doha and a chaupai), Jodhpur, circa 1800, (light spotting and flaking) - 25 x 15.3cm.

Lot Essay

The noble in the sky of the second picture (with ladise behind him) may possibly be the patron of the Baramasa set.
A similar Jodhpur Baramasa illustration is in the National Museum of New Delhi, dated 1750-75. (O.P.Sharma, Indian Minaiture Painting, Biblioteque Royal Albert 1er 1994, pl.68, cat.66)
