Charles and William Wingender immigrated to America in the third quarter of the 19th Century from Hoehr, Germany. They worked for Richard Clinton Remmy, maker of lots 207 and 256 in this sale, in Philadelphia before they bought the Richard Snowden pottery in Haddonfield, New Jersey in the 1880s. Their use of applied decoration and elaborate relief designs are based upon their Germanic training. In an article by Lester Breininger he describes their work as..."including Lion's heads and Classical helmeted profiles. Also provided comic or contorted facial expressions." Their unmarked works are often confused with German pieces. Their emphasis on hand craftmanship was typical of the potters of the Arts and Crafts movement.
