Lot Essay

Jacob Weber, born 1803, is listed as a shoemaker by trade in Fivepointville, Lancaster County, however, he is best know as the maker of a related group of painted boxes. Each box is of similar construction, those six inches and taller have bracket feet, while those smaller were made to rest on their bases. The characteristic decoration associated with Weber is that of a house flanked by trees and decorated with tulips, as the example shown here. Some examples are inscribed with the name of the recipient and the year it was made. The unnamed example shown here suggests that some of the houses depicted may have been compilations, and probably for a higher price, the name of the recipient could be placed on a box, and decorated to the purchasers specifications.
