Lot Essay

This sampler was purchased at a public sale on Main Street, Stouchburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It has been suggested that the house depicted in the sampler was identical to the house out of which the sampler was purchased, thus implying the original residence of either the Donges or Spangler families. The 1850 census shows neither the name Spangler nor Donges in Stouchburg, Berks County; it does show several Donges living in nearby Myerstown, though none with an Elmanda residing.
