A WOOL JACQUARD WOVEN COVERLET
EMANUEL GRUBE, 1813 - 1890, WARWICK TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, DATED 1843

Woven in red and blue wool in a reversible pattern of large tulip medallions interspersed with small flowerettes and starbursts, the whole enclosed by a border of meandering roses, self-bound on one side, finished with fringe on three sides, each corner identified with the name of the weaver, "Emanuel Grube," the manufacture date 1843, and the name, "H. Bomberger,"--104in. x 87½in.

Lot Essay

A native of Pennsylvania, Emmanuel Grube is known to have been weaving in Lancaster County from 1838 on. He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Pennsylvania census as a weaver in Warwick Township. Grube is buried at the Salem Lutheran Cemetary, Kissel Hill, Lancaster County.
