With its spiked tulips and vines, compass star decoration, and painted colums, this chest relates to a group of painted and decorated blanket chest from Centre County. It is most closely related to one illustrated in Fabian, p. 180, fig. 189. Both chests have compass-star pinwheels, and painted columns. The treatment in the painting of the entablature of the columns is similar, however, the with varies. The flared feet on the example illustrated in Fabian may suggest that the chest is later in date than the bracket foot example shown here. Also illustrated in Fabian, p. 214, fig. 14 is another example from Centre County with a singular flowering spiked plant flanked by painted columns.
