RARE RIOJA FROM MARQUES DE MURRIETA AND MARQUES DE RISCAL
Now Lying London, S.E.1
Luciano Murrieta, Marqués de Murrieta, the founding father of the modern wine business in Rioja, was born in Peru, in 1822, the son of a Spanish nobleman who had married a beautiful local heiress. his early years took him to many corners of the world, but in particular to London where, whilst working in his uncle's bank, he became intrigued by the wines of Bordeaux that were so popular in the English capital. On his return to Spain he founded the winery in 1852.
He planted the estate to the south-east of Logrono in 1872, forming an efficient ring of vineyards around a central winery. From the outset Luciano de Murrieta was keen to incorporate the latest wine making technology at the Ygay estate. His was inspired by the French wine-makers of Bordeaux, who through ageing in oak barrels were able to achieve standard strength wines which could travel without spoiling. Success followed success, and soon Marqués de Murrieta became a leading wine producer in Rioja, with important medals won in the Universal Exhibitions of Paris in 1878 and 1889, as well as at Bordeaux in 1895. Marqués de Murrieta was also the first exporter of unfortified Spanish red wine, with regular shipments to Cuba and Mexico during the second half of the nineteenth century.
Today the original vision of Luciano de Murrieta remains intact; the fine Castillo Ygay cellar where only the very oldest wines are matured; the 300 hectare estate of indigenous grape varities surrounding the cellar; the ageing of both red and white wines in 225 Lt. American oak barrels, and the emblematic brand names, (some still with the original design of labels), Marqués de Murrieta, and Castillo Ygay.
All the following wines have never previously left the Bodegas cellar. Many of the wines were recorked during the 1980's. Wines that were recorked now carry a simple lead medal, hanging from the neck of the bottle, on which the vintage is marked. Murrieta have selected for the sale the wines they consider to be from only the best vintages. Labels are generally in good condition, although the older wines have very bin-soiled labels. Levels are good all top-shoulder or better. Each lot has been packed into a new presentation wooden case
