ASHE, Thomas. Travels in America, performed in 1806, for the purpose of exploring the Rivers Alleghany, Monongahela, Ohio and Mississippi ..., London: for Richard Phillips, 1808. 3 volumes, 12° (occasional light spotting and pencil scoring), contemporary green calf, covers diamond patterned within gilt roll-tooled Greek key borders with gilt dentelles extending from each corner, the spines decorated and banded with a various gilt vignettes, black calf labels (joints and edges lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. Sabin 2180: "An unmeasured hatred of the Americans pervades the whole of Mr. Ashe's narrative. His account of the Atlantic States forms the most comprehensive piece of national abuse we ever recollect to have perused. Their inhabitants it seems are all abominably vicious, but in degrees very nicely distinguished; the middle states being bad - the northern very bad - and the southern execrable". (5)
