Lot Essay

Compare the picture, signed and dated 1638, offered at Charpentier Paris, 2 December 1958, lot 12, ill. (M.L. Hairs, The Flemish Flower Painters in the XVIIth Century, 1985, p.487). As pointed out by Hairs, op.cit, p.357, Marlier was inspired by compositions by Jan Brueghel I, dating from a decade earlier.
