Lot Essay

Although almost forgotten today, the painter enjoyed great success. Born in Antwerp, he settled in Paris in the early years of the 18th Century and exploited the idiom of Philips Wouwerman in such scenes as here depicted, with great delicacy and subtle colours. In 1729 he was appointed Peintre Ordinaire du Roi at the court of King Louis XV.
