Lot Essay

The composition is similar to that of Lot and his daughters, in the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts, Antwerp (G. Marlier, 'L'Atelier du Maître du Fils Prodigue', in Jaarboek Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, 1961, p.97, fig.10). As pointed out by Marlier, op.cit., p.96, the influence of the Fontainebleau School is apparent in his pale colouring of the female figures and the composition at half length. Another version was offered at Sotheby's London, 9 December 1992, lot 130, ill.
