A version of the picture, dated 1608, formerly in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (K. Goossens, David Vinckboons, 1954, p.82/3, fig.40 and p. 141), for which the preliminary drawing is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (K. Goossens, op.cit., pp.83/4, fig. 41). Two other versions are recorded: in the collection G. Hoschek, Prague; and in the Chanenko Collection, Kiew (photographs in the RKD).
The composition is repeated with slight variations in an engraving by Boetius à Bolswert (Holl. 317; K. Goossens, op.cit., p.84, fig.12), where the peasants have been replaced by soldiers. Vinckboons shows himself here as the successor to Pieter Brueghel I.
