Lot Essay

The pose derives from the double portrait of Stadholder Willem II and Mary Stuart, signed and dated 1647, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (J.R. Judson, R.E.O. Ekkart, Gerrit van Honthorst, 1999, p.237, no.301, fig.186). Judson/Ekkart, op.cit, p.239, nos.16-22A, lists eight versions and copies in which the pose is repeated.
