Rectangular with rounded corners and oval section, the red leather cover applied with four silver initials M around a gold crown, the mount engraved '4/16 October 1872', marked on inner mount, in original fitted case, the inside cover stamped Nicholls & Plincke à St. Petersbourg with Imperial warrant

Lot Essay

The initials are those of Maria Maximilianovna, Princess Romanovskii, Duchess of Leuchtenberg, born 4/16 October 1841, grand-daughter of Nicholas I through his daughter Maria, and Eugène de Beauharnais, who married Wilhelm Prince of Baden in 1863. She died in Karlsruhe in 1914.
