The Duke became Ambassador to St. James's in 1873, and while in London was famous for his lavish receptions, and received the Prince of Wales with great magnificence. He was also the deputy for the parti Légitimiste in the Sarthe département until 1898. His Paris residence was the hotel de La Rochefoucauld-Doudeauville, now the Italian embassy.
